Sweden, Denmark, and Norway will purchase weapons for Ukraine from U.S. stockpiles as part of a recent initiative led by the United States and NATO, the Swedish government announced on Tuesday. According to the statement, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo will donate $500 million (approximately €455 million) in military aid, including air defense systems, anti-tank weapons, ammunition, and spare parts.
“Ukraine is not only fighting for its own security but also for ours,” said Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson during a press conference. U.S. President Donald Trump, in collaboration with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, announced a plan last month for European allies and Canada to purchase U.S.-made weapons—including advanced Patriot missile systems—for Ukraine.
On Monday night, the Netherlands announced a donation of €500 million toward the initiative, officially known as PURL (Ukraine’s Priority Urgent Requirements List). NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the announcement from the Scandinavian countries. “Since the earliest days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have shown unwavering support for Ukraine. I commend these allies for their swift efforts to advance this initiative,” Rutte said.
