A Japanese court has sentenced Tetsuya Yamagami to life imprisonment for the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, bringing legal closure to one of the most shocking crimes in modern Japanese history. The ruling comes more than three years after the killing, which deeply unsettled the nation and drew global attention. Yamagami, 45, had already confessed to the murder in October 2025, when the long-delayed trial finally began.

The attack took place on July 8, 2022, during a campaign event in the western city of Nara, where Abe was shot with a homemade firearm. The former prime minister, 67, was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead hours later. The assassination traumatized Japanese society, where gun violence is exceptionally rare and firearms are tightly regulated under some of the world’s strictest gun control laws. Court proceedings confirmed that Yamagami acted out of personal resentment linked to the Unification Church, often referred to as the “Moon sect.”

He blamed the organization for his family’s financial collapse and believed it maintained connections with Shinzo Abe. Investigators revealed that Yamagami’s mother had donated approximately 100 million yen, roughly one million dollars at the time, to the religious group as part of her faith. The defendant reportedly targeted Abe because he associated the former leader with the church. The assassination exposed a major political scandal in Japan, as investigations uncovered close ties between the Unification Church and several lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). In the aftermath, four government ministers resigned, intensifying public scrutiny.

The case triggered a nationwide debate over the relationship between politics and religion, as well as concerns about oversight of religious organizations and their influence on public life. It also forced a reassessment of security at political events, an issue previously considered marginal in Japan. While the life sentence closes the judicial chapter of the case, the political and social repercussions of Abe’s assassination continue to resonate. The killing marked a turning point for Japan, reshaping discussions on security, political transparency, and the role of religious groups in the country’s democratic system.
