Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, has taken a historic step in space exploration by being selected by NASA to launch its interplanetary ESCAPADE mission to Mars, using the powerful New Glenn rocket in a liftoff scheduled for September 29, 2025.

This milestone places Blue Origin ahead of SpaceX in the race to deliver a NASA mission to the Red Planet, as Elon Musk’s Starship project remains in its testing phase without a confirmed date for interplanetary flights.

The ESCAPADE mission, with a budget of $80 million, aims to study Mars’ magnetosphere and understand how solar wind interacts with the planet’s atmosphere, a crucial step for future crewed missions and for determining the long-term potential for habitability. In addition to the two twin satellites that form the mission’s main payload, ESCAPADE will carry a secondary payload focused on new space communication technologies, reinforcing cooperation between NASA and the private industry in developing systems that enable more ambitious deep space travel.

Experts note that this achievement not only represents a breakthrough for Blue Origin but also signals a paradigm shift in how NASA manages its missions, showing increasing openness to the technological and logistical capabilities of private companies. While SpaceX continues refining Starship for long-distance travel, Bezos’ New Glenn is consolidating itself as a competitive alternative that could reshape the landscape of Martian exploration in the coming years.
