Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that any military attack by the United States could trigger a broader regional conflict. The statement comes amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington, driven by diplomatic pressure, sanctions, and increasingly sharp rhetoric from both sides. Khamenei said Iran does not seek to start a war but made clear that it would respond forcefully to any act of aggression.Ā

He emphasized that the Iranian people would deliver a ā€œstrong blowā€ to anyone who attacks or harms the country, framing the message as a warning rather than a declaration of intent. The remarks are part of a wider deterioration in relations between Iran and Western powers. In recent days, Iranian authorities labeled the armed forces of several European Union states as ā€œterrorist groups,ā€ following Brussels’ decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard under the same classification.

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused Europe of acting under U.S. influence, further escalating the confrontation in political discourse. During a parliamentary session, lawmakers appeared wearing Revolutionary Guard uniforms as a symbolic show of support for the force. Footage broadcast by Iranian state media showed lawmakers chanting hostile slogans against the United States and Israel, highlighting the confrontational tone dominating Iran’s domestic political environment.

While largely aimed at an internal audience, the messaging also serves as an external signal of defiance. In Washington, President Donald Trump’s administration has continued to push for a new nuclear agreement with Iran, while warning that military options remain on the table if Tehran refuses to change course. These statements have reinforced perceptions of an increasingly volatile standoff.

At the center of the dispute stands the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an elite military force operating parallel to Iran’s regular army. Established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Guard reports directly to the Supreme Leader and plays a decisive role in Iran’s military, political, and regional power projection.

Taken together, Khamenei’s warning and the internal reactions in Iran suggest a strategy rooted in deterrence rather than an immediate move toward war. Still, the combination of aggressive rhetoric, sanctions, and military threats keeps the Middle East in a state of persistent tension, where miscalculation could carry regional consequences.
