Tech giants OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have taken a major strategic step by announcing the construction of five new artificial intelligence data centers in the United States, as part of the ambitious “Stargate” project, a multibillion-dollar initiative considered one of the largest digital infrastructure plans in recent history. According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and one of the main promoters of the initiative, “AI can only fulfill its promise if we create the computing power necessary for it,” highlighting the urgency of building platforms capable of sustaining the exponential growth of artificial intelligence in the years ahead.

As disclosed on Tuesday, three of the new facilities will be developed in partnership with Oracle, located in Texas, New Mexico, and another site in the American Midwest that has yet to be revealed. Meanwhile, OpenAI, Japan’s SoftBank, and a subsidiary based in Ohio and Texas will oversee the construction of two additional complexes. Together, these new centers are expected to generate around 25,000 new jobs, underscoring not only the technological impact but also the economic and social benefits for local communities.

The scale of “Stargate” is nothing short of remarkable: along with projects already underway, the initiative will reach nearly seven gigawatts of capacity within the next three years, with the ultimate goal of surpassing ten gigawatts in the established timeline. This figure positions the network as one of the most powerful data center systems in the world, designed specifically to meet the growing computational demands of next-generation AI models. U.S. President Donald Trump officially launched the project in January, joined by top executives from the tech industry, emphasizing its strategic importance in securing America’s competitiveness in the global AI race.

Estimates suggest that participating companies may invest up to 500 billion dollars in expanding this infrastructure over the next four years, consolidating a robust digital ecosystem capable of not only training and deploying AI systems at scale but also ensuring energy supply and operational security at each site. With this initiative, OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank aim to lead a new era of supercomputing, reshaping the technological and economic landscape of the country by merging innovation, infrastructure, and employment into a historic project of unprecedented scope.
